Echuca
So, this morning, Wednesday June 18, 2025, I wake up to the mist/steam/fog hanging over the swimming pool, they say Victoria is cold but bloody hell I'm getting old it's so cold down here. Off for a wander up the main street. Its lovely, so much of the old town has been kept and restored I think there are about 6 pubs/hotels in this street. Wouldn't have been odd for back in the 1890s I suppose, there are signs to show the history of the buildings only 1 of the pubs was owned by a lady! The shops were so welcoming everyone said hi and they had so many lovely things to buy, I was good and resisted most of the pretty things, but I did indulge in the sweets shop. the fudge is delicious. Bought a few pressies too.

Had to take a photo of this log. It is taller than me at its base. These are some of the trees that the barges used to bring down the river to go to the sawmill ready to be made into lumber for Melbourne.
From Echuca goods would go by train to Melbourne.

The log wagon would have been pulled by bullocks through the town to the saw mill.
Plenty of wine and ale barrels made in the area too.

Private river boats. The water level rises in spring as the snow melts in the snowy mountains and the water flows down this way.
after my walk up the main street in the old part of town I went for a drive to have a bit more of a look, and this is my view as I was eating lunch. The river is so serene.

These tree roots are exposed from the last flood in 2022 that washed away so much soil from the riverbanks. The gumtree is still tall and strong.

A walk around the museum showed a lot of what they carried on the Paddle steamers and barges up and down the river. at the height of the season there could be 40 paddle steamers in port loading and unloading goods some heading to Melbourne and then the steamer and barge would head upriver again with all sorts of goods for homesteads along the river.
